Tzolk'in and New Frontiers are both heavy, strategic Eurogames where players build engines to convert resources into victory points. Despite completely different themes—Mesoamerican time-tracking versus futuristic space colonization—both emphasize variable paths to victory, engine-building, and action-timing.
New Frontiers (medium complexity)
New Frontiers is a standalone board game set in the Race for the Galaxy universe, where 2 to 5 players compete to build the most prosperous space empire. The core of the game revolves around the a "role selection" mechanic similar to Puerto Rico.
Explore for planets, settle new worlds, develop advanced technologies, and produce goods to score the most victory points.
Tzolk'in (medium-heavy complexity)
This game is famous for its signature mechanic: an interconnected system of physical gears that rotate each round. Players act as Mayan leaders, balancing resource gathering, monument building, and worker feeding while "riding the gears" to access increasingly powerful actions.
